Advocating for a better profession and public realm

For more than three decades, the members of the United Architectss of the Philippines have worked to advance our quality of life through design. From designing the next generation of energy-saving buildings to making our communities healthier and more vibrant, from helping neighborhoods rebuild after disasters to representing the Filipino architects to the rest of the world, architects turn dreams and aspirations into reality. Decisions are being made every day that affect the way architects practice, and UAP advocacy aims to serve its members as the voice of the profession to the decision-makers at all levels of government.

In this page, you will know how UAP Regional District A5 explores variety of reasons for becoming involved in advocacy work. Because, we believe that it is the responsibility of every UAP member to represent the profession’s interests before any concerned authorities. Further, UAP members need to do their part for their profession and their community.

Advocacy on Sustainable Design

Architects have a unique responsibility for the sustainability of the built environment. This responsibility extends beyond the design of high-performance buildings to include project siting and impacts on transportation, water, land, air and habitat.

All projects can and should minimize energy and resource demands to combat climate change and provide healthier communities.

We advocate laws and standards that promote not only sustainability but also improved integration of the built and natural environments.

Members of UAP Regional District A5 will be a leader in educating designers, contractors, owners and the public about inspiring and environmentally responsible design, construction, operation and renovation of the built environment.

Advocacy on Social Responsibility

The social responsibility of architects lies in part in believing that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society, and that it can even have a role in making a place civilized by making a community more livable.

As architects, we want to believe that architecture affects the quality of life. Whether you believe that or not, one thing is true: As members of society, we can affect the quality of life in our communities through involvement beyond our practice. As citizens of our society, we can influence social conditions; we can even be the cause of positive social change. Very few of us would choose to give up all our personal possessions to help the poor or dedicate our entire life to a cause, but many of us do want to make a contribution to our social fabric.

Many of us in UAP Regional District A5 would likely be willing to give some portion of our time or financial resources to help the disadvantaged or to be a benefit to society.

Advocacy for the Architecture Profession

We believe that government creates the parameters in which architects practice. So if our National and Local Officials receive no message from the architectural profession, orders or laws will be created that may likely hinder the profession and the profession will fail to prosper.

With that said, the UAP Regional District A5's leadership understands that architects are the only design professionals who are educated, trained, and tested in integrating all essential systems that go into creating the built environment for human use and occupancy. Unfortunately, however, our elected officials don't always think along these same lines. Officials don't necessarily need to understand the importance of architectural training — that's why it's our job to know what orders and bills are being considered and how they are likely to affect the architectural profession.

Therefore, UAP Regional District A5 continues to make real strides in connecting our membership to our national and local policy makers and implementors.

The energy, creativity, and initiative of our members truly does shape the built environment—and it can also raise awareness about the power of design to engage communities, inspire vision, and provoke positive change in public policy.
